Overview: You are an immigrant to America at the turn of the 20th century and are going to record your experience in a journal for future generations to learn about your trip. This journal will be posted in an online wiki that you will work on both in class and at home. The wiki URL is:
Required Journal Entries: You journal will need to include the following entries. Pictures must be included on each page using the tag after you’ve uploaded your image file to the wiki.
- Describe your trip to America - Pick a country from Europe or Asia. Explain the conditions that are making you leave your home to travel to America. What were conditions on the ship like? What did you eat? How long did it take? - Depict your processing into America - What did you go through to enter America? Did you enter at Ellis Island or Angel Island? What tests did you have to go through to be allowed entrance to the United States? Which city are you going to settle in? Why did you choose that city? - Show the U.S. politics, economics, & society of the time - What reforms are being undertaken in your city? Who appears to dominate politics? Where do you work? What is it like? How much do you get paid? What other things are happening in the American workforce at the time? What do you do for fun? How much free time do you have? What kinds of social reforms are occurring in your city?
The Process: Write your three journal entries in a word processing document. This lets you write, revise, edit, and save your work. When you have the final version of each, you’ll post it online. You’ll go to the wiki website, navigate to the correct page for each journal entry, and copy and paste your entry in.
*Using Firefox instead of another web browser allows you to use “Visual Editing” instead of “Text Editing.” Visual editing simply makes for easier editing and image uploading.
You will be able to read everyone’s wikis online and integrate their entry information into your own journal. This means that you can work with other students to create situations, family relationships, and events that will enhance your own journal. (Ex.- You and your “sister” write about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and give your different perspectives on the event. Maybe you were standing outside watching people jump from the building and worrying about your sister because she was inside.)
This is a creative writing assignment so you need to be detailed and not just state facts.
Additional Requirements: You will also be required to submit a paper Works Cited page in MLA format. You must have a minimum of 3 sources and one must be a non-Internet source.
Vocabulary Terms: You must use a minimum of 10 of these terms at some point in your journal entries. Please italicize the words.
- Dumbbell Tenements - Tammany Hall - Tweed Ring
- Settlement Houses - Jane Adams - Nativism
- Child Labor - Anarchists - Row Houses
- Triangle Shirtwaist Factory - Ethnic Neighborhoods - Tweed Ring
- Social Gospel Movement - Samuel Gompers - Melting Pot
- Chinese Exclusion Act - Kickbacks - Urbanization
